Generating invoices with a PayPal payment button
I've tested out quite a few online accounting apps lately and FreeAgent seems to have virtually all of the features I'm seeking - save one. LessAccounting.com gives users the ability to send their invoices with a PayPal button for clients who wish to pay their invoice via credit card. Is this functionality under consideration or is there a workaround using custom invoice templates?

Inappropriate?Hi Dave
This functionality is definitely under consideration! We're currently evaluating how best to implement this and we hope to have it available within the next couple of months, possibly earlier.
A workaround for you right now would be to include the actual URL in the invoice comments section.

Inappropriate?any more on the paypal button for invoices yet this is a hurdle for me as i am new to the whole freeagent thing please help asap
Thanks Rachael -
rachiek,
Sorry, forgot to mention last time that we do allow you to include a 'paypal payment link' in the text of the email you send along with the invoice.
Just make sure you have your paypal account included as one of your FreeAgent bank accounts to use this. -
Inappropriate?Would it be a link like https://www.paypal.com/uk/cmd=_prq&id=WssFr9rBY3l6NMR-ViVTS3YhqrxDMJf1ZJDzaQ
In this case I'm not sure why I would need to have my paypal details in FAC (even though they are already) but there is clearly something I am not grasping in terms of simplicity - I generated the above link by sending myself a dummy request :(
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate? So is there a button that i can add to an invoice that means our clients can pay by paypal sorry to sound such a idiot
-
Inappropriate?I agree - I believe that it would be best to have the paypal link a button or a link that is shortened (like .. Click Here to Pay with Paypal).
Also - with the email include tags, I would suggest instead of having to type them in that you have include check boxes to have these automatically included in the email. Even have some generic emails pre created that we can use instead of having to retype the email over and over again. -
Jerett,
We're definitely on for having a generic email template to be the default... -
Inappropriate?i take it that there is no such button that i am requiring then ah perhaps
some person could create this button and become a genius -
Inappropriate?Doesn't appear to be a button but more so a way to insert a direct link to Paypal within the email that is sent out regarding the invoice. It's not a button - but link - and it seems to work at the moment. I believe they will work up other solutions in the near future - or at least - one could hope.
I’m stoked about FAC
-
Inappropriate?Jerrett, yep we're on the case with that. We currently only send text-based emails rather than the HMTL ones that could allow us to improve the way that link looks.
One issue with putting the Pay Now button on the invoice itself is that it looks a bit out of place when the PDF invoices are printed out... -
Inappropriate?Could you not have a printable version that takes out the paypal link button so that should the client wish to send payment via post or just keep the invoice for records then no paypal button would be visible.
On the other side how do add the link to my emails do i have to generate it myself or is there one you just pop in. if it sounds like i am asking the same question over again then sorry i do find this a tad confusing. -
Inappropriate?rachiek: as long as you have a paypal account set up as one of your bank accounts in FreeAgent (since otherwise how can you accept payment of your invoices via PayPal, right ;-?) then the text
[paypal_payment_link]
in the body of an invoice email will be replaced with a web link to a paypal payment page for that invoice.
So you could write, as part of your email:
"To pay online, please click here: [paypal_payment_link]"
Your client will be able to click on (or copy and paste) that link and pay online.
Does that make sense?

Hi Ed,
I've just sent an invoice using "[paypal_payment_link]", which doesn't resolve to a generated PayPal payment link. (not even an empty space). Any ideas would be warmly welcomed :) -
Inappropriate?I have a suggestion! Is there any chance you can put some generic text to the left of these fields? Without preview it's hard to know what will appear, but now I see the output is in the format:
WT 019
02 Dec 08
01 Jan 09
£250.00
https://www.paypal.com/..
Whereas it would be nicer if it was in this format:
Invoice number: WT 01x
Invoice date: 02 Dec 08
Payment due: 01 Jan 09
Amount due: £250.00
Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-
Google cart:
Ok the last was perhaps a bit cheeky, but I hope you get the idea and others agree with my monolingual proposal.
I’m optimistic

Hi Tom
You can insert these fields anywhere you like in the email body, so you can already achieve what you want, e.g.:
Hi [contact_first_name],
Here is my latest invoice.
Reference: [reference]
Date: [invoice_date]
Due Date: [due_date]
Amount Due: [amount_due]
Kind Regards,
Tom -
Inappropriate? That is a really good suggestion i think i very well mat give that a go i can see the problem with attaching a button to the invoice and this seems a good alternative.
Thank you
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Thanks for the tip
