Great product, but ...

I was really impressed by your product, and for a moment I thought it would be "the one" to solve our accounting needs. I've been searching and trying most Online Accounting solutions, but - in one way or another - they always "lacked" something.

My main needs where:

a) Online (so people can remotelly access) and multiple OS (we use Mac, Linux and Windows). - GREAT FAC does it !

b) User permissions, so I can get my employees to enter invoices without seeing our bank statements. - GREAT FAC does it, although a more fine grained system would be good. Maybe a tick box next to the permissions rather than a slider. Also a read oly account would be good (already suggested in another post)

c) Nice and clean interface. - GREAT job FAC !

d) Bank conciliation and OFX / QIF import - GREAT !

So, I was sold.

a few more things I would like, but could "live" without for some time:

e) We are based in Brazil, so being able to have a localized version would be very helpful. Not all our staff speaks English, so they might have some hard time with the interface. We could even do the translation on our end, if that feature were available.

e1) I noticed that during setup there's no option for our currency (Brazilian Real) BRL, but that's something I assume is easy to fix.

I was about to enter my credit card when I discovered that I could not customize the Chart of Accounts. That really blow me away. Every solution I had seen so far lacked many of the features I listed above, but not the Chart of Accounts.

I imagine that the built in chart of accounts in FAC probably solve *most* UK business scenarios, but we really need more flexibility (and also delete accounts we do not use, so we can have a cleaner system). Also, despite the fact that the interface and reports are not translatable, in an editable chart of accounts we could create items in our language, which would make things easier for our team and accountant to understand.

Can I have any hope to have this in the near future?

But, again, despite this I want to congratulate for your great product and work, even if I can't become a client...

    Hi Francisco,

    Thanks for the great feedback.

    Regarding your points.

    e) We won't be translating the full interface any time soon I'm afraid but we do offer translations for outgoing invoices and estimates. We don't yet have Brazilian Portuguese but the actual translation work is quite simple. Maybe you could help us with this?

e1) The Brazilian Real is actually being added to the next release, as it was requested by another user!

    f) You're right the reason we have a fixed chart of accounts is because it keeps the UK accountants happy, and the accounts regulated, but we do appreciate that people need more flexibility (outside and inside the UK), so we're going to introduce a means of either tagging or describing invoice items in a more flexible way. This could then be used to generate reports on "project management" or "web design" for example.

I can't give you a timescale for this, but it's something we do want to put in place.

Does that help you at all?

    Hi Roan,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I think the tag feature would be very good, although I do not use it in our current accounting system, as we have a flexible chart of accounts. But I can imagine some use for it, as you mentioned it gives flexibility to generate custom reports.

But, unfortunately, I think it does not substitute a custom chart of accounts. Although it might be easier for an accountant to have all business using the same chart, it imposes big restrictions on the "management" part of the company.

My accountant's system has a flexible chart of account, and I - as a client - can ask him to adapt to our needs.

I'm not talking about a completely out of the standard chart of account, as every company has telephone bills. But some companies have specific expenses and income they would like to track in the accounting reports, not through tags.

So, I can't say the tag will help me on this matter. Being aware that no solution is perfect I am willing to give up some features (such as the interface translation), but I don't think I'll be able to live without a minimum customisation of the chart of accounts.

Nonetheless, as I mentioned before, you guys have a great app!

    Francisco
