More than one billing rate per project?
With one of our clients, we charge two hourly rates for two different types of work. Is it possible to have a choice of two/more different billing rates when entering time? If not, is there any chance of this being added at some point in the future? Thank you!

Inappropriate? After clicking the "I have this question too" button I'd have some more detail about my angle on this.
I would like to be able to set a second rate as an overtime rate which would apply when I go beyond a set number of hours. I would also love to have this working for projects where I charge a day rate as I often charge by the hour for any additional hours beyond what defines '1 day'
At present I have to manually add any overtime hours to the invoice which is clunky.
Thanks
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I agree this would be a nice feature. Perhaps if the 'Normal Billing Rate' could be set for each Task, rather than at the Project level, that would work for me.
-
Inappropriate?Yes. I need to charge travel at 50% of the 'standard rate' but have to manually ammend the invoice
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? In my case, different types of work attract different rates - so "per task" in my case. However, I would be perfectly happy with just being able to overwrite the "normal billing rate" manually on individual timeslips - it's "good enough, fast".
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for your inputs everyone. We'll probably end up with one billing rate per task. Since the time is priced on the invoice by hour you'd not be able to mix billing rates within the same task anyway.
Sarah - you'd create two tasks if two billing rates applied.
Matthew - you'd then create an 'overtime' task (or 'overtime' versions of existing tasks) to handle your case
Jason - similarly you'd create a 'travel' task
Frans - you'd get what you want!
I’m confident we'll get this incorporated into FreeAgent as soon as resources allow!
-
Inappropriate?I'd would be interested in this feature too - my wife and fellow Director provides freelance photography work to another photographer.
We've agreed a number of different rates: - day-time & night-time as well as a different rate for the role that she would have on the night (eg supervisor/photographer or seller (photos are printed and sold on the night)); a total of 6 rates in all!
As she would do one night here, one night there, I've set things up in FAC as one project (which is recreated annually), and 6 tasks, each corresponding to the role and whether it is a day-time or night-time event.
A billable rate per task would made the monthly invoicing that much quicker; but please, please make it default to the global project rate to cater for my other Contracts, which have a single rate irrespective of task!
Cheers
Olly
I’m looking forward to hearing when the feature's available

Inappropriate?Hi,
I have finally got around to testing FAC (thanks for the extension) and I must say I am very impressed. I will defiantly be migrating from my current system at the end of the month!
However, during my testing I came across this tread and would like to add my own requests/thoughts here too.
I am just waiting to confirm the acceptance of a bit I put in for some work and if I get the project I will have a further 3 contractor working on the account with me. Unfortunately as per the other user here I will have the same problem with billing as all 4 project team members will be billed at a different rate.
To avoid me having to create different tasks for each contract as suggested above, I think a nice solution would be to add a rate against the people, you could either then add a check box to the task rate saying default from the user rate or specify by task or project.
Maybe a neater solution could also be to add people to the project itself as with my previous application, this then brought in there default rate from there personal file or you could override on a project basis.
In addition it would also be nice to be able to define if a task was billable or not, for instance I might want to track overtime against the project but not bill unless it becomes obvious that two much is being done.
One final point and along the same lines, in another post I notice a request to be able to group expenses on an invoice by category so that you would just get subtotals for each instead of pages of the stuff where you have multiple people submitting expenses for a project. Is this still being looked at and any idea (without committing to time scales) when we might see it?
Many thanks

Inappropriate?Hi Jason,
Thanks for the comments and suggestions.
A lot of the topics (and those of others) really stem from the fact that we originally created FreeAgent for freelancers, contractors and consultants - effectively one man bands,
As it turns out we've got an increasing amount of small businesses using the application who have additional requirements. We're trying to address those, as you'll see on Monday night with the release of better user access levels, but we've got a way to go.
Overhauling projects and tasks is definitely overdue so it is on our roadmap, but it's a big roadmap right now. I'm confident we'll get there if you can be patient with us in the meantime.
So different task rates, unbillable tasks etc are all things we want to implement. I just can't say when that will be exactly. -
Inappropriate?Different rates for different tasks is handy but different default rates for different people would be more useful. We charge different rates based on experience and skills of person doing the work. They may do the same tasks as someone else but not to the same level so rates based on task could end up being more difficult to manage.
Perhaps a choice of whether default billing rates of individuals or tasks should override the other could be set in preferences. -
Inappropriate?Different rates for different tasks gets my vote. Also with options for 0 rated time and rate - for when we want to log free of charge time (cos we're nice) but still have a record in the timeslip
-
Has this been implemented yet. I also would like to have a rate per task with the default being the project rate. I had to create two projects for a client but this also means two invoices as the auto invoice wont pickup all work for one client.
Looking forward to when this is resolved. -
Inappropriate?Just to reiterate and clarify (hopefully) my earlier posting. The ideal scenario for me would be:
1) default rates for each user (could you also add a user type of subcontractor)
which could be overridden by:
2) default rates for each project
which could be overridden by:
3) rates for each task
Many thanks in advance! -
Hi Jeremy, We've been thinking along the same lines recently. This hierarchy seems to make a lot of sense, although it is relatively complex to introduce. -
Inappropriate?i would like to see a rate for each employee. This works out best when used with adding timetracking onto invoices.
Tom
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?Hello everyone,
Thanks for all the continued feedback and ideas. I think we're starting to get a clear picture of what is required here.
What I can't do is give an exact timescale for implementation yet. We've been working flat-out on some other much-requested features recently, but we are progressing through our roadmap at a good rate and improving tasks/projects does feature prominently on that.
Sorry I can't be more specific but it is a real challenge prioritising what features to work on, when different people have very different views on what's important. I hope you can bear with us. -
Inappropriate?I am new to FA and think its great. I would be great to have a way to keep track of time slips on jobs as I don't bill for my time in once I get involved in a design project as I have made my money on the product. However it may be a tool which may help me reevaluate the way I am doing my business, and tracking the time on jobs where the client is not billed would be great
-
Hi Jane, from our next release you'll be able to track 'unbillable' time spent on projects which should help you out. -
Inappropriate?Mee to I have the same problem and the same request...
either per employee or per task, it would be GREAT! -
Inappropriate? Please let me know your roadmap on this point because I'm looking for the right web application and...except for this point, everything would be great!
If it's a question of days...ok
PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
regards.

As Roan mentioned above, we're working on 'unbillable' time/tasks at the moment. The next stage of this will be to introduce tasks-level billing rates but unfortunately we can't pin down a date for you since we don't know actually know ourselves right now. Rest assured it's fairly high up on the roadmap. -
Inappropriate?I think the new functionality that has been implemented for % markup on expenses is the same functionality and would work with flexible billing rate.
Default is "bill at project rate" then if un-ticked you would get the % entry (ie. 50% for travel rate 125% for marked up rate [needs to be + or -] ) or manual type a rate in.
Bet the challenge is that you then have to retain this figure with the timeslip rather than the hours figure.
Keep up the great efforts - the results are fantastic.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?hmmm...
this feature is very urgent!
