Should I be filling in the Receipt Reference when entering expenses?
Does HMRC require a reference? If so, are there any rules about how I number receipts?

Inappropriate?Andy, that Reference is there for your own use. I know some people like to number receipts (there are no rules that I'm aware of) but personally I just make sure the receipt goes into a 'this year's receipts' folder.
Were there to be an HMRC visit, I'm sure the conscientious receipt-numberer would save some time piecing together the jigsaw. Only you can decide if it's worth the effort.
I'm not an accountant (as you know!) but as far as I know as long as you retain the evidence you'll be fine. -
Inappropriate?Ed, thanks for the explanation. I use the same system as you, and I'll continue to do so.

Inappropriate? There are no rules relating to "purchase" invoices i.e. invoices for items/services you have paid for but HMRC has recently changed their rules with regard to invoices you issue to customers.
