Hi,
I did try that workaround (see initial post) but it still didn't work.
Am sticking to TB 2 and have prevented it from auto updating until I see a lot more people happy with TB 3-
goldtop marked one of Michael A. Pasek's replies in Mozilla Messaging as useful. Michael A. Pasek replied to the question "How to go from Thunderbird 3.0 back to 2.0". goldtop and 6 other people think it's one of the best replies.

thunderbird 3 showing blank panes (no mail or folders)Just upgraded to Thunderbird 3 and it doesn't seem to work at all for me. Am unable to see any mail/folders or compose new messages. The two panes (where folders used to appear, and inbox on the right) are completely blank, and blank tooltips appear when my mouse is over them.
My mailbox profiles appear to be ok, as it downloads mail (I see the pop-up alert saying I have new mail) but it doesn't show up in the preview panes / anywhere I can read it.
The Get Mail and Address Book buttons are the only ones that work on the toolbar.
I have uninstalled and re-installed Thunderbird 3, also deactivated Kapersky as read somewhere this may cause a conflict, and followed the other advice about.the antispam files in the TB3 install itself; all to no avail.
Running Windows Vista 64 bit - any help appreciated (for now I've re-installed TB2 and turned off auto update - phew!)
